SWEET HOME, Ore.– As a freshman, Jefferson’s McKinley Warren found herself performing at big time event on Saturday at the Meet of Champions at Sweet Home High School.
The freshman competed in three events on the day: Shot Put, Discus and Javelin. The freshmen placed in the Shot Put, placing seventh with a PR throw of 35-feet-1.5-inches. Not bad considering she was seeded in one of the earlier flights and having to have a big throw to even make the finals.
“Making it to finals really helped,” smiled Warren. “I made it by half-a-inch and I PR’d by a foot.”
Discus didn’t go according to plan for Warren. She fouled on each of her attempts, but with a quick turnaround with Javelin, she had no time to dwell on what had happened.
“I had to look at the positive’s with Discus and I had to push that aside so I can focus on Javelin. And just think about the good things that went in Discus,” starts Warren. “My release was good, but I was just a little too early and you got to look at the little things.”
Warren finished the Meet strong with Javelin. Finishing 13th in the event to close out her day in Sweet Home.
Warren was one of fourth Lion athletes to compete at the Meet of Champions. Joining her was Corben Ellis, who finished tied for fourth in the Pole Vault, Bellamie Harroun, who finished fourth in the High Jump with a jump of 4-feet-10-inches and Dimetrius Rodriguez.
Rodriguez finished fourth in the Long Jump with a jump of 20-feet-4-inches as the Senior is hoping that Saturday’s big meet will propel him to a possible State Meet berth later this season.
“It shows me where I’m at and what I need to work on. What I can expect in the future and so on,” starts Rodriguez. “I gotta stay focused. keep working because previous years, I don’t know what it is, but I feel a lot better this year. Stay focused and keep working.
