KEIZER, Ore.– The Blanchet baseball team just found ways to score in a game where both theirs and Umpqua Valley Christian’s defenses were pretty locked down throughout the entirety of Tuesday’s non-league game.
In their 5-3 victory at Volcanoes Stadium, their six hits and eight walks that they drew set them up for some interesting scoring opportunities that they took full advantage of. Four of their runs came off of Monarch errors, and another came off a bases loaded walk as the Cavaliers built a 5-0 lead going into the seventh inning.
“It’s amazing. It felt great to watch my teammates come around home. I was very surprised because of the rust, I thought we would take a while to get used to it, but it was a beautiful surprise to see small ball coming into play, especially taking advantage of the errors and the hits to the outfield, it was great,” said Mitch Wort, who led the team with two hits in the win.
Umpqua Valley Christian plated three rus in the top half of the seventh inning, but Blanchet was able to get out of dodge with the win as Josh Mosar came in for relief of Carson McNally to close out the victory and halting UVC’s momentum. McNally, Mosar and Drew Bartels, Bartels started the game and went three innings before McNally came in, combining for nine strikeouts at Volcanoes Stadium en route to the season-opening victory.
“It was a great experience playing them again. They really tested us to the best of our abilities. We try to show out as much as we can, and today, I think we did. We did everything on both sides of the ball as much as possible,” said Wort.
Blanchet is scheduled to play at Marist Friday at 4:30pm, weather permitting.
