SILVERTON, Ore.– With 16 minutes left in the game, the Silverton Girls Soccer team saw their then 3-1 lead cut to one with Caldera coming close to tying up the game at three soon after.
But their defense managed to clear the threat up field, giving their offensive weapons a chance to do what they do best.
And they did.
Marley Wertz scored her second goal of the game in the 76th. The goal gave Wertz her 51st career goal, breaking the school record. Making the game 4-2 at the time.
A minute later, Chloe Brooks pushed it to 5-2 Foxes. It was the senior’s third goal of the second half and of the game.
What was a lapse in their defensive that allowed the Wolfpack to come close to tying the game up, proved to be momentarily as Silverton finished off their season opener with a 5-2 victory.
“There’s never a safe point. And we know that and we bring that tension into every single point that we score and every goal that we score,” said Brooks. “Winning a tough match like Caldera, our confidence for our upcoming games against some of the harder teams that we have that we’re about to face and knowing that every team is beatable if we stick to our game.
“There is no safe number, just keep building cause everyone has the ability to comeback.”S
Silverton will host Summit on September 11 at 7pm.
