HILLSBORO, Ore.– West Salem-grad Courtney Gills has been versatile with the NW Dirtbags 18U squad this Summer.
She’s caught, played the infield at third base and played the outfield. All to contribute to the team as they embark on their final Tournament of the Summer on Tuesday up at Hillsboro Stadium. And going into college at Linfield University, it’s huge for the former Titan to go in with the ability to go at any spot that she could instead of being locked into one spot.
“It’s huge knowing that I could have multiple opportunities to play anywhere and I’m not fighting for one spot, I have multiple chances to get in where I can get in at,” said Gills.
This Summer has been big for Gills, who was an Honorable Mention All-State Selection at Catcher, in preparation for her freshmen year at Linfield.
In the opening day at the TCS World Series up in the Metro Area, Gills played Left Field and third base on Tuesday while going 4-for-6 and driving in 6RBI’s with a three-run Home Run as the NW Dirtbags went 2-0 on the day moving into Day 2 of Pool Play.
“It’s good to just to play with a really good team, get everything tuned in for Linfield and get myself ready for the next season,” starts Gills. “It’s huge knowing that we can come out here and get our bats rolling. If we can hit, we can be pretty good. Our pitchers know that we have her back when we’re hitting.”
Sophie Jackson collected four hits and drove in 3RBI’S for the NW Dirtbags on Tuesday. Charly Upmeyer struck out seven batters pitching in Game 1 of the day.
