TURNER, Ore.– As the season inches closer, the Cascade Football team were out on the field putting in work preparing to defend their 4A State Championship Title with a Team Camp on Monday afternoon.
One of the returners, Jamison Walsh sticks out during the Varsity defensive session. An All-State Selection as a defensive Linemen as a junior last year, he hovers over the line at his Defensive End stance looking more like a blitzing Linebacker than a End.
It’s all about leverage over the Offensive Tackle and getting around the edge as fast as he can. And it’s been so far a success for the incoming senior.
“It just helps me be more explosive off the ball coming off the edge,” describes Walsh on his Defensive End stance.
Walsh was a key factor in helping Cascade en route to an undefeated season last Fall, ending with a 4A State Championship to cap off the season. Walsh, on top of earning All-State honors as a Defensive End, also earned All-State honors as a Tight End/Wide Receiver. Now entering his senior year, he’s taking to heart what those seniors from last year’s squad taught him and trying to incorporate it into this season as he takes on one of those Senior Leadership roles.
From the weight room to the field, he’s just trying to spark the younger guys into continuing what the program has built over the past few years to get to this point.
“We lost a lot of guys, but a lot of us juniors going to be seniors just got to step up and take that role in and be leaders,” starts Walsh. “A lot of them were hard workers and I took after that and get all the young guys going. I love the program, great coaches.”
The Cascade football team will open the season September 4 at Crescent Valley, the first of three road games to open the season. The Cougars home opener will be on September 25 against Molalla.
