AURORA, Ore.– Falls City’s Marleigh Winn started a rally that ended up seeing Winn’s Comets Fastpitch 16U squad walking it off at North Marion High School on Saturday afternoon.
Faced with the expiring time and trailing the Fundamentals 18U squad 4-2, Winn singled to lead off the bottom half of the sixth inning. The incoming Mountaineer sophomore got out on a Fielder’s Choice, but slowly the Comets battled to load up the bases and eventually cleared the bases off a Boston Bryant single to left field and the Comet base-runners took advantage of an error to walk-it-off 5-4 to close out Pool Play 2-0.
“It’s a team effort for sure. It’s a team effort for sure. My pitchers, my catchers, we won’t be here without them,” starts Winn.
The Falls City infielder went 5-for-5 with 3RBI’s and hit a two-run Home Run in the Comets Fastpitch’s first game of the day against the Power Valley Sharks 16U squad.
Despite coming from a small 1A school, Winn credits co-oping with 5A Central and competing against larger-school talent with helping take her game to the next level this summer.
“That was a big push for me…I definitely feel like it gets Falls City more seen. Nobody knows who Falls City is until we start co-oping with these bigger programs,” starts Winn. “It’s been big, I feel like I’m doing good. Ball is ball, I love being out here. Softball is like my biggest goal in life, I want to play in college. I like playing out here, being out here,”
Just all-around, her game Winn feels like she could improve upon as the Comets Fastpitch 16U squad starts the Gold Bracket on Sunday morning.
“Definitely bunt coverage. Some of my defensive stuff needs work. Hitting I need to do better, seeing the outside pitch. I feel like though, as Softball players, there’s always something we need to work on. Playing summer ball, I feel like it has helped me work and improve on my craft.”
