STAYTON,  Ore. —  The Regis Softball team are just six runs away from tying history and seven from making it.
The Rams, entering their 2A/1A State Quaterfinal game against Union/Cove on Friday, are sitting with 418 runs on the year.  With that total, Regis is only six off the mark of tying North Douglas’ single-season runs scored total of 424 and seven from breaking it.
Averaging 14.4 runs a game at the moment, it’s safe to say that the record is in reach for the 2A squad.  They got the hitters, two Rams, Hadley Foster (.618) and Elizabeth Fessler (.565) are hitting over .500.  Peyton Welch (37) and Foster (36) each lead the team in RBI’s to help set Regis up for success offensively this year.
It’s weird to think about though.   Five years ago they didn’t have a program, and now, they’re knocking on the doorsteps of history and are one of the top teams in the classification.
Rams HeadCoach Kathy Bonhke knew they were close over the last few games, but eluded it to as mentioning a no-hitter as it is happening.
“I think at the start of the season that it was going to be a possibility. We knew we had a good squad, but that’s a lot of runs,” smiles Bonhke.
On the list includes some heavy hitters.  Scio in 2025, the 3A State Champions, Regis recently passed on their pursuit of the record is just one of the squads that the Rams jumped to get to this point.
“It’s really awesome when you think about when what this program was five years ago, we didn’t even field a team and to have these many kids out here getting it done and getting to that point is awesome,” Bonhke said.
Depth has been the receipt towards the Rams success to this point. The runs, the defense, the success.
And now.  Besides the runs record, Regis is also one win away from their first State Semifinal appearance since 2011.
First pitch for their game Friday is at 4pm.
