INDEPENDENCE, Ore.– McNary’s Kali Ellis left it all out there in the 1,500-meter run at the John Oliver Invitational on Saturday.
She was in the front pack after the first lap, sitting fifth after the 500-meter mark before moving to third-place two laps in. Ellis started to fade to bit late, but battled through the fatigue and soreness that the race and the competition provided to finish fifth in the race. Doing it in a PR fashion with a time of 5:01.88 at Central High School.
“The strategy was to hit 80’s and we were right on. I felt their pace slowing down going into Lap 3, so I had to make a move. And it hurt, but I kept fighting and then I got a good time, so I’m happy,” said Ellis. “I know I got more in me.I’m realizing that I can do more when I don’t limit myself.”
The 1,500-meter race was the lone event for Ellis on this day.
For Derek Olivo, he was in three events on Saturday at the big meet. Winning the Javelin (201-feet-4-inches), the Discus (151-feet-5-inches) the Shot Put (53-feet).
“I think it went pretty well. (Shot Put), it was my second time throwing with my new techinque..I started spinning instead of gliding and I’m driving more in my back. (Javelin) I’ve been trying to get over 200 every meet that I can,” Olivo said on the day. “I’m pretty excited for the future and I’m pretty excited with how I’m doing now.”
Gary Olivo finished third in the Javelin and seventh in the Shot Put. Mason Bowlby won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.99. Adam Ellis finished eight in the 200-meter dash. Yosef Picazo finished sixth in the 1,500-meter race with a PR time of 4:01.39. Colton Hodges finished sixth in the Discus.
