Working On His Craft

SALEM, Ore.–  Basketball is life for Western Christian’s Gavin Hall.

He remembers his parents taking him to the gym growing up while they coached at Kennedy out in Mount Angel.  Both his older brother Luke and older sister Reese played the game.  The effort that they put into coaching with his parents and playing with his siblings motivated him to work harder.
“It’s basically my life.  I go home and that’s all I do.  I go to sleep, I dream about basketball.  It’s all that’s on my mind, 100-percent,” said Hall.
And that passion and love of the game, it paid off this past season as a junior when Hall saw all the hours of work and practice pay-off hard when he was named 2A State Player of the Year on the heels of the Pioneers their third 2A State Title since 2019.  Despite winning that big time honor, Hall went back to work this offseason to improve on his game with his senior year on the horizon.

“All the hours and the years I’ve put into this game, I felt like it finally paid off after three years,” starts Hall.  “I’m just trying to sharpen every little skill I have from last year and make it better.  Working on my defense especially, just getting bigger physically and stronger athletically.  I’m trying to be vocal.  Like a vocal leader, but a good role model too, lead by example more than anything.”
With a new week dawning Monday for Hall and Western Christian, so does a new season.  The Pioneers will host a jamboree on Wednesday before opening up the season in their first regular season game Friday at The Barn against Pleasant Hill before hosting Oregon Episcopal Saturday afternoon as Western Christian starts the defense of their State Title.
“Just giving 100-percent in everything we do.  Whether it’s practice, games, all the little things,” said Hall.
