SALEM, Ore.– The West Salem Boys Basketball team just kept finding a way to stay in the game on Tuesday evening in the fourth-place game of the Capitol City Classic at Willamette University against Sherwood.
Despite the fatigue on both sides having played four games over the last six days both squads came out firing. The Bowman had the slight advantage going into the second quarter leading 20-16 on the Titans.
Sherwood were able to get a run going, building a 28-20 lead before West Salem cut it to 31-30. The Bowman pushed their lead to 37-30 late in the quarter and led 38-33 by the intermission. And the second half of the game was much of the same. Sherwood would pull out to a sizable lead, only to see West Salem claw back.
It was just the little things that ultimately decided this one in favor of the Bowman, who would go on to take the game 76-72 to finish fourth in the Capitol City Classic.
” I think we showed a lot of toughness in this game and keep going, it’ll help us down the road. It was a battle, but we just kept going,” said Jacob Sanderson, who finished with 11 points in the game. “We just got to finish off games, finish them off.”
Sanderson was one of four West Salem athlete’s to have scored in double figures. Jack Lapray led the Titans with 21 points, Jonah Munns contributed 16 and Jaxon Oertel scored 14 points as West Salem finished the CCC 2-2.
“It helped us getting some wins going. We’ve had a really hard schedule, five losses to Top 7 teams probably,” Sanderson said of the preseason to this point.
West Salem will have a quick turnaround as the Titans will head to Bend to take part in the Summit HolidayTournament, the squad will open up the tournament Saturday afternoon against Redmond at 2:30pm
