DAYTON, Ore.– The Regis Girls Basketball team just outright flew around in their 63-32 victory over Cascade Christian on Thursday afternoon to open the Dayton Winter Classic.
The Rams, who led the Challengers 19-10 after the first quarter, outscored their Medford-based opposition 44-22 over the course of the final three quarters to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Their press defense created stops, and in transition, they were able to convert those stops into points. The squad hit on nine three-pointers, five from Clara Persons and another four from Frankie Kohnke. Kohnke led the Rams with 22 points with Persons not too far behind with 19 points in the victory.
“We definitely turned up the intensity, especially in the press which led us to a bunch of wide open shots,” said Kohnke. “We have great team chemistry already. “
The Dayton Winter Classic will give them, the Rams and everyone else involved, a great taste of what the State Playoffs may be like. Consecutive games against quality opponents that will give them a good measuring stick of what is to hopefully come by March.
“I feel like our preseason games are super important this year and it’s good to play against quality teams so you need what you need to work on and what you need to get better at..there’s going to be some good teams once we get there,” said Regis Head Coach Tim Manning.
The Rams will have a off-day at the tournament Friday before playing Yamhill-Carlton on Saturday at 6pm
