SALEM, Ore.– On match point in their regular season finale, South Salem’s Kamree Orizotti broke the All-Time Career Assists Record when she set the game sealing kill to Briella Mathis that completed the Saxons 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 sweep of the Celtics on October 23.
The assist, 829th on the year, was her 3,370th in her career. Allowing the South Salem setter to break what was a 12 year record set by Madison McLain of Santiam Christian fame. McLain set the record back during her career with the Eagles between 2010 and 2013, setting what was a daughting amount of 3,379.
Of note, Mathis’ kill, her 13th of the game, was her 1,383rd of her career that put her eighth All-time on the career kills list as the senior duo got to be apart of a moment like this back on Thursday night on their Senior Night.
“My teammates were counting down for me, which was cool to see. Especially to set Briella and to get a kill, it’s who I’ve been with since freshman year and we’ve been this duo all along, so it was pretty special to do it with,” said Orizotti. “Every practice, every game i just wanted to better myself. I just want to lay it all out for my senior year and just do as well as I can.”
South Salem, who finished fifth in the 6A State Tournament last Fall, will look to reach the Final Site again. And the road there is a favorable one, but they, being the Saxons, still have to play the games to get there.
Orizotti joked before practice on Monday on how she almost texted the team and asked if they could get a practice in. She, like the rest of her teammates, is just already ready to get back into the gym and make the push for the final game of the season on November 8 at Forest Grove High School.
“We got a pretty good seed going into the tournament, but we can’t take ang games or practices off. We’re really locked in and play together as a team,” starts Orizotti. “We’re super competitive at practice and motivated. That’s what makes it really fun for us. Just coming to practice, going hard, and bringing that same energy into the game. I think we love going hard against each other.”
