SALEM, Ore.– Western Christian’s Sammy Quesada has been stepping up as a leader for the Pioneers Boys Soccer team this Fall.
One of two seniors on a relatively young squad, Quesada has found his voice, along with other returners for the Western Christian/Amity squad, to help the coaching staff convey the message to the newer players.
“It’s big, we have to communicate a lot and the coaches, me and a couple of other people who’ve played a while, we’ve been helping because we got a bunch of new players. We all help each other out and teach each other in what to do in certain situations on defense, offense. Especially for me, us leaders have a big role in communicating on the field and tell people where to go,” said Quesada.
Preseason was the growing pains of sorts for the young squad,going 1-4-2 in their opening seven games, but are entering 3A/2A/1A Special District 2 play coming off a 4-3 win over Plesant Hill on Tuesday. Despite the growing pains, it was laying the foundation down for what is ahead.
They’re more connected as a team and hopefully they can carry that over to Thursday’s league opener against Yamhill-Carlton on Thursday with the goal of league playoffs and hopefully reaching the 3A/2A/1A State Playoffs once again as they did last season.
“Preseason was just building up…it was teaching to mold up and work through it together, so hopefully going into league, we’ll be more connected because preseason got us pretty connected,” said Quesada. “We just got to fix the little things. We got to keep our energy up and stay positive, and hopefully, we’ll make the league playoffs.”
Western Christian/Amity’s first home league game of the season will be on Tuesday when they host Dayton before they start a three-game league road trip.
