SALEM, Ore.– About 35, 40 kids were at the first day of South Salem’s Girls Basketball Kids Camp on Tuesday morning.
It’s the ninth year that the Saxons program has hosted the event with the current players helping coach the younger athletes, all in between third and eighth grade, at the camp.
Giving back to the community is something that South Salem Head Coach Adrian Lewis believes in since he took over the program nearly a decade ago. Having his current High School athletes walk through the fundamentals like they have gone through themselves hopefully gives them a better appreciation of the grind they go through during the season.
“It’s something I believe in, giving back to the community, and providing a chance for our young girl athletes a chance to play basketball. By seventh, eighth grade, there’s a burnout, so making it as fun as possible and giving my high school girls a chance to coach,” starts South Salem Head Coach Adrian Lewis. “It’s different. You can be a great player, but it’s how you explain things, how you show things. The frustration when you teach them something and they can’t do it now and get a sense of what i go through, so it’s a better understanding. It’s been great, and they thrive in that situation.”
The camp goes through Thursday at South Salem High School and runs from 9am. through noon.
