DAYTON, Ore.– Dayton’s Asher Maxwell couldn’t overcome Amity’s Kiyan Vrell last Spring in the Long Jump event at the 3A Special District 3 District Meet, but this year he overcame the Linfield-commit to win the Long Jump District Title Friday to win his first District Title in the event.
Maxwell’s winning jump was 21-feet-6.5-inches, three-and-a-half inches ahead of Vrell for the win.
“It means a lot. Honestly when I first got up and looked at it, I was mad because it didn’t look very far and then they said it and I was jumping,” Maxwell said of his winning jump. “Districts last year, Kiyan beat me in Districts and it’s my goal this year to beat Kiyan and that’s what I want to do and I did it.
Now getting ready for the State Track and Field Meet, Maxwell’s goal is to be in the pit, preparing himself to be ready to go by Thursday to see how well he can do at Hayward Field.
“I’m going to work on my landing and everything. I want to place,” said Maxwell.
Erick Chinchilla won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.79 and finished District Runner-Up in the 300-meter hurdles. Hadley Hughes and Rylie Hedgecock went one-two in the Shot Put. Hughes also won the Javelin throw, Nora Shepherd won the Long Jump and Triple Jump District Titles and Shepherd qualified for State in the High Jump following her third-place finish with a jump of 4-feet-10.25-inches.
