SALEM, Ore.– The Chemeketa Community College Women’s Basketball team relied on their defense to stay in the game with Lane Community College on Monday evening.
On two occasions, especially, once in the second quarter and once more in the third quarter, the Storm were within three or four points of the defending NWAC South and NWAC overall Champions. The Storm held the Titans of Eugene to 34.7 percent shooting overall in their attempt to hand Lane their first defeat since January 27, 2024.
“We played well today, we played extremely well defense as far as team defense and locating their shooters for the most part. We took care of the ball better in the second half to help us keep it close as well, I think if we made a few more shots, it’ll be a different score,” said Storm Head Coach Justin Sherwood.
It was 47-43 after three quarters, but it was in the fourth quarter in which the Titans pulled away for good in Lane’s 68-56 victory. But despite being on a three-game skid, this game feels like they’re slowly making the turn for the better five games into the NWAC South Region schedule.
“It showed that we can compete with the number-one team, but it also shows that after these last few losses that we’re coming up now. We just got to take from this and learn from the games,” said Mady Diaz. “Our defense was really good. We were there for every help. We just couldn’t hit a few shots, but it was our defense that helped us, and we kept the pressure on them the whole game.”
Diaz finished with nine points and five rebounds. Bree Peters led the Storm with 17 points and had eight rebounds. Annie Bafford also had eight rebounds to go with six points.
