SSBC Honorees For December 13

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club honored McNary’s Patricia Mike (Girls Basketball), Sprague’s Evelyn Wirfs (Girls Wrestling), Western Christian’s Gavin Hall (Boys Basketball), Western Christian’s Runon Muroya (Girls Basketball), Sprague’s Carly Skogstad (Girls Basketball) and South Salem’s Teagan Scott (Boys Basketbal) at December 13’s meeting.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Girls Basketball, is Patricia Mike.

Patricia, a senior, plays guard for the Celts. In the opening game of the season against currently #7 Summit, Patricia had 23 points, 6 boards and 3 steals in the competitive non-league game. New to the Celts, Coach Brittany Dunn says “She’s done an exceptional job integrating into our team and being a leader.”

Patricia has been honored twice previously as an AoTW.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Girls Wrestling, is Evelyn Wirfs.

Evelyn is a junior for the Olys. At the Tyrone Woods Memorial Tournament, Evelyn took 1st place, winning each of her matches by pin in less than a minute each. She finished the tourney with the most pins in the least amount of time of anyone else in the event. Evelyn, who took 2nd in State last year at the 4A level with Cascade. Coach Blaine Cote says, “She transferred to us this year and has earned a captain role and has been an amazing addition to our team. She’s an Oregon national team member. She’s an incredible wrestler and an even better teammate and her energy is infectious.”

This is Evelyn’s first AoTW honor.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Western Christian Boys Basketball, is Gavin Hall.

Gavin, a senior guard, is a 4-year varsity player and the returning 2A Oregon Player of the Year. The Pioneers are 3-0 in non-league and ranked #1 in 2A. Conference play starts on Monday at Gervais. In the 72-42 win over #5 ranked 3A Pleasant Hill, Gavin had 19 points, 11 boards, and 4 assists. In the win over #9 ranked 3A Oregon Episcopal, he scored 17 and had 6 boards. “One of the top guards in the state at all levels.”, says Coach Geoff Martin.

This is Gavin’s second AoTW honor.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Western Christian Girls Basketball, is Runon Muroya.

Runon, a senior and team captain, is a three-year starter and returning Oregon 2A Player of the Year. The Pioneers, currently ranked #1 in 2A, are 2-0 in the early season. Runon is currently averaging 19.5 points a game. In the opening game of the season, a 40-29 win over 3A Pleasant Hill, the first half was a low-scoring defensive battle where Runon accounted for 7 of the teams 13 points, with the Pioneers holding a one point lead heading into the locker room. In the second half she sparked the team with her 3-point shooting and scored 10 of 19 fourth quarter points to pull away for the win. In Saturday’s 56-38 win over 3A Oregon Episcopal Runon started fast, hitting four first-half 3-pointers and finished the game 5 for 6 from the line.

Coach Ben Browns says of Runon, “…she inspires her teammates with her quiet leadership and her explosive performance on the floor.”

This is Runon’s second AoTW award.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Girls Basketball, is Carly Skogstad.

Carly, a junior and team captain, is a three-year varsity guard and wing for the Olys who are 3-2 on the young season. In the first three games Carly is averaging 15 points per game, including scoring 30 in a 57-55 win in the season opener against the Sheldon Irish. Carly is also averaging 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals per game. Coach Andy Sydow says, “Carly is a team captain and not only is she a star on the basketball court, she is an excellent student and leader.”

This is Carly’s third AoTW recognition.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Boys Basketball, is Teagan Scott.

Teagan, a junior, plays guard for the Saxons who are 3-0 in the young season, which includes wins over Roseburg, Corvallis, and Sheldon. After the first two games he is averaging 29.5 points, 3.5 boards, and 3 steals. He is shooting 64.1% from the field.

From Coach Kip Ioane, “Teagan is a relentless competitor who also cares deeply for the TEAM. He is always the last player to leave the practice floor and the first to ask about reminders the team needs for anything on or off the court.”

This is Teagan’s second AoTW honor.
