STAYTON, Ore.– When the Stayton Boys Soccer team found the back of the net in Tuesday’s season-opener against Cottage Grove, they kept finding it.
Eight goals in total were scored. Not bad considering coming into the season the Eagles were curious who was going to find those goals.
And here’s the thing, the Eagles had a slow start to their barrage of goals and ended the game. Their eight goals, two each from Miguel Ceballos, Edwyn Perez and Josiah Dessieux with Adam Andrews and Jayden Rego rounding out the scoring, came in a 37 minute stretch. Stayton scored their first goal in the 21st minute and their final goal coming 18 minutes into the second half, the 58th minute of the game.
“Just getting used to how all of us play, we struggled in the beginning. We just got to get more comfortable and confident, slow down and keep doing our own pace and just do our own thing. Play as a team and not as individuals,” said Perez. “We still have a lot to work on. We just have to take it day-by-day, be patient and get as much work in as possible and keep working as a team.”
Stayton will also look to join some ratified air as well the next time they take to the pitch.
With the result on Tuesday, the Eagles have extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games. A tie or win against the Seagulls will extend it to 20 games-in-a-row. For what it’s worth, only ten other teams dating back to 1990 have accomplished that feat. Stayton will look to do that on September 10 at Seaside to kick off a three-game road trip. The Eagles will return home September 24 to open Oregon West Conference play against Taft.
