NORTH BEND, Ore.– The Amity Girls Basketball team took advantage of 21 first half turnovers and held Coquille to 20-percent shooting from the field Thursday afternoon to open the 3A State Quarterfinals to open up their 60-27 victory, leading 41-10 at the halftime break.
It was their energy on defense that held the Red Devils in check. Creating those turnovers and were relentless in their defensive pressure’s as they look to reach the State Finals once more this season. Step one was done, and now it’s onto the semi’s where they hope to carry over this energy and pressure against a familiar foe in Jefferson Friday afternoon.
Ironically, there were some nerves with the Warriors going in. They seemed to have the jitters that quickly faded as they started to get into a groove and found their rhythm on the court.
“Going in, we were nervous, I was nervous. Just staying at it, good defense and executing the offense, it was really helpful towards getting our lead higher and higher,” said Haley Miersma. “If we can keep playing like we played tonight, we will have a good chance. Energy, energy is what helps us. If we get a charge, we all get in each other’s faces. Energy helps a lot.”
Miersma finished with 16 points in the game while Alyssa McMullen led the way with 20 points. Amity had 26 steals with Adie Nisly, Mya Haarsma, and Lyliana Rideout, each having five steals.
