SILVERTON, Ore.– McNary’s Luis Martinez finished out a tough tournament with a high-scoring victory over Sherwood’s Caden Burnett on Saturday evening in the 113-pound Championship Title bout.
28 points were scored between the two wrestlers with Martinez coming out victorious with an 18-10 decision to close out the long day at the Jack Berger Boys Invitational at Silverton High School.
“It was tough…but just keep fighting over and over again, all the training and everything. When you get down, you got to get back up again and God is always there to pick you up,” said Martinez.
That high scoring match wasn’t nothing for Martinez. Each one of his wins saw the Celtic wrestler put up gaunty numbers. 14-0 to open, 20-4 in the second round, 13-1 in the quarter’s, 16-5 in the Semi’s before the finals. All opportunities for Martinez to improve and to reflect on with the District Meet coming up in two weeks.
“This tournament has helped me see some competitors that I’m going to see at State. That final match, it’s going to be at State, I’m probably going to see him again. But it’s going to get me prepared. Look at the film and know what I did wrong and come back stronger at State.”
Dillion Shepard finished second at 144 pounds, falling to Hillsboro’s Justin Leonard by an 18-8 decision. Shepard and Martinez were two of five McNary wrestlers who placed in the tournament on Saturday as the Celts finished 11th as a team in the 24 team field.
