SILVERTON, Ore.– Eli Bischoff made some noise at the Jack Berger Boys Invitational on Saturday at Silverton High School.
One of six Rams wrestlers, the smallest school in the field that was populated by 5A and 6A squads, Bischoff reached the 175 pound Semi-Finals round. Along the way he took down the top seed Andres Hernadez from 6A Sherwood and picked up his 100th win of his career while at the tournament.
“Winning in the quarters against the one-seed, that was my 100th career win, so that meant a lot…It’s been a goal of mine since my freshman year. That’s always been on my mind and I’m glad that I hit it,” said Bischoff.
The Ram wrestler met his match down the stretch as Bischoff went on to finish sixth in the tournament. Falling in his final three matches, falling to Crater’s Jethro Watkins, Glencoe’s Noel Wood and Sherwood’s Hernandez, against some tough competition to close out the tournament on Saturday.
In that final match against Hernandez, a rematch from earlier in the tournament, there was a back-and-forth between the two wrestlers. Bischoff led 3-0 after one period and nearly was able to pick-up a nearfall on Hernandez, but Hernandez managed to get the upper hand on his 2A opponent to turn the match into his favor to close out the match.
“Even if you’re losing, if you fight until the third round, you don’t know what’s going to happen, maybe you’ll come out on top. So always keep pushing,” said Bischoff moving into the District Meet.
The Regis Boys Wrestling team finished 21st in a field of 24 teams in Silverton against some tough 5A and 6A competition on Saturday. Peyton Welch finished sixth for the Rams in Friday’s Jack Berger Girls Wrestling Invitational at 190 pounds.
