SCIO, Ore.– The Scio Girls Basketball team snapped two long losing streaks Wednesday night when they defeated Salem Academy 41-21 at home in PacWest Conference play.
They first snapped an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season, and second, they snapped an 14-game losing streak to Salem Academy. Their last victory over the Crusaders came on February 17, 2014 when the Loggers defeated the Crusaders 52-43 to close out the regular season.
And on Wednesday, Scio jumped out to a big lead on Salem Academy. The opening four minutes helped the Loggers set the tone from the start and it led to Scio leading the Crusaders 28-11 by the halftime break.
“I think the first four minutes, we did really well. We’ve been working on really jumping out the first four minutes and making them call the first timeout. Even in the first half, just trying to get a good jump and it really built up our momentum for the rest of the game and we were able to produce off that,” said Scio’s Macy Johnson.
Johnson, the lone Varsity senior, led the Loggers Wednesday with 17 points, Honor Bagnall contributed another 11 points for Scio. The Loggers sustained their energy through the second half despite some second half adjustments by Salem Academy for the final 16 minutes of the game.
“It was a good learning experience for us in making sure that we come out with energy and if you do get punched in the mouth, finding a way to claw back and hit back. It’s all about executing what we want to execute. Take care of the ball, run your stuff. Come out and compete and execute,” said Salem Academy’s Derek Imig.
Baylie Imig led the Crusaders with ten points as Salem Academy travels to play Oregon Episcopal on Thursday in a non-league game before hosting Blanchet Catholic on Monday for a PacWest Conference game.
