SALEM, Ore.– The Amity Girls Basketball team tore the game open in the fourth quarter of their 53-33 victory over 6A Sprague to open the Capitol City Classic Camry Bracket on Saturday morning.
Leading 33-25 going into the fourth quarter, Haley Miersma having hit a midrange shot to close out the third quarter, the Warriors began to pull away from the Olympians. A 10-0 run to start the quarter put the defending 3A State Champions ahead 43-25 before Sprague got on the board off a Carly Skogstad three-pointer.
“Last second shots, they really pump your team up because you get those extra points at the last second and it really helps our team gets us fired up for the fourth quarter and we took that energy into the fourth quarter and we finished the fourth quarter, ” said Miersma of her shot.
“Being able to play good teams right now, it’ll prepare us for Coos Bay and all the other hard games we could play.”
Sprague was able to limit the Warriors offensive attack through the opening three quarters, their trap defense and ball pressure allowed the Olys to stay with Amity before the run that the Warriors had. At 3-2 on the year, Sprague’s off to a strong start to the year and will look to bounce back Sunday against the loser of Grants Pass-Central Sunday at 3pm at Chemeketa Community College.
“We were prepared, we knew they were going to be fast, we knew they were going to have a lot of cuts. Coach prepared us with a scouting report. Their defense made it hard on us, but i think we’ll get better. We’ll learn from it and get back tomorrow, ” said Skogstad. “
Skogstad led the Olympians with 18 points and five three-pointers.
Eliza Nisly led Amity with 14 points, Adie Nisly contributed another 11 and Kylie Wilson scored another ten in the win for the Warriors, who will play the winner of Grants Pass-Central on Sunday night at 7pm.
