SCIO, Ore.– Amity has been close to a victory in their three games to this point, but just couldn’t get over the hump.
But on Thursday, in their PacWest Conference opener against Scio, they finally got it done.
Tied at 25 early in the second half, the Loggers with the momentum, the Warriors began to rebuild their lead.
They led 42-33 after three and pushed their lead to double-digits early in the final frame. Leading 48-34 at this point as they were able to sustain their momentum until the end of the game to finally get in the win column for the first time this season. Taking the game 61-50 at Scio High School.
“We didn’t play our best in the first half for sure, but we picked up the intensity and the defensive pressure and that led to more free throws and more easy buckets on the offensive side and to close it out and get the first win,” said Amity’s Carter Haarsma, who had a team-high 19 points in the win. “We’ve played some good teams and fought. Fought really hard, we just couldn’t come out with it at the end. We had a lead in all those games.
“To finally get one is nice. We didn’t play our best, but it’s a win.”
For the Loggers, their shots not falling proved to be their downfall in this league opener for them as well. They energy was there, so was the intensity, the difference down the stretch was Amity was able to hit their shots while they struggled to hit there’s.
But confidence is still there for Scio four games into the young season. The shots will come, they just got to keep putting them up as they head to play Portland Adventist Academy on Saturday night.
“Next time we have to execute. We need to make our three’s, our team isn’t shooting very well and we have to execute next time,” said Scio’s Brycen Zosel. “The last four games we’ve had, I’m super excited to see what the team can do. We’re a lot better than I think people think we are. We need to knock down our shots and the offense will come, I’m not too worried about it.
“Our defense is our key. We’re a chaos team and we want to be great on the defensive end, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Zosel led the Loggers with 21 points and Rhordan Meadows contributed another 17 points.
The Warriors, who also saw Austin Lopez score 14 points and Ethan Owings scoring another 12 in the win, will be at Yamhill-Carlton on Tuesday night.
