SALEM, Ore.– The turnout for the Sprague Football Youth Kids Camp was something speculator the past three days. Over 200 kids showed up for the game that stretched from the turf field in Olympic Stadium into the grass field that houses the baseball and softball fields.
Olympians Head Coach AJ Robinson credits the community support and their youth programs in the area for the strong turnout in this year’s camp.
“The Knapp family, Nate and Shannon, run our youth program, and they do a really good job with outreach in the community. The Sprague community cares a lot about football, there’s a lot of kids in our community, and parents are good about supporting them, getting them signed up for things,” said Robinson. “We have a lot of youth interest in this area, so it’s been really fun to see.”
The Sprague football players ran the drills as they tried their hand in coaching. Station-to-station they went and took turns with different kids to convey the message that they’re trying to get through to the kids in what they are doing.
“It’s fun. You get more experience and knowledge learning, not just teaching them, but also teaching yourself. It’s an adulting experience for us players as well, a nice teaching moment,” said Carter Wilson.
The Olys Youth Camp wraps up Thursday evening starting at 5:30pm.
