PORTLAND, Ore.– The Corvallis Marketmen opened up the American Legion Triple-A State Playoffs with a grinder of a victory over the Baseballism Wet Soxs on Saturday afternoon at the University of Portland.
But they found a way to the win, a 2-1 victory in nine innings to advance them to the second round of the playoffs.
Corvallis had a chance to win it in regulation with runners on the corners but couldn’t get the decisive run across. But with how their defense were playing, anchored by Kaden Shaffer’s eight inning outing, they turned back to it as their calling card.
Eventually, their patience paid off in the bottom half of the ninth when Andrew Street laid down a bases loaded bunt with Drew Rice screaming home from third to hand the Marketmen the victory.
“It feels great. It was great to have all those moments that we had to battle through to come out on top,” said Street. “Stacking ‘W’s’ keep them going. Fill up the strikezone, making plays and swinging the bats like we do.”
Corvallis will play the Portland Barbers Sunday at 7pm at the University of Portland.
