STAYTON, Ore.– Regis’ Korben Schumacher had his hands full taking over for his older brother Kollin at Quarterback last Fall on the Rams Football team.
The squad was young, Schumacher himself was a sophomore in the Rams program when he took over the quarterback position last Fall, and they took their lumps and bumps. But they got better from it as they were back on the field Monday for Summer workouts at Regis High School.
Kollin Schumacher helped Korben through a few things he learned through his time at Regis. Kollin’s Senior year, which was Korben’s freshman year, the Rams reached the 2A State Semi’s. And that senior group inspired Kollin to be the best leader that he can be when it became his turn last year and once more entering this year.
“Watching that group of seniors really helped me out with the leadership stuff, and I really appreciated them. They helped me out a lot. I’m looking forward to a good year this year. You get better every year,” said Korben Schumacher. “It’s a tradition here at Regis to be leaders wherever we go…we’re all leaders out here. If I’m having a bad game, someone’s going to pick up my slack
“Teamwork is a pretty big deal here…Learning and getting better from our mistakes will play a big part. We got a good group of guys.”
Carson Bradley came over from Stayton. Hayden Lulay, James Hayes, and Andrew Hawley return and are expected to contribute this Fall.
“We also got a good group of freshmen. I think it’s going to be a good year,” said Schumacher.
Now, a year under his belt, Schumacher is looking towards taking that next step. Smarter decisions, reading the defense in front of him. Things that will hopefully help Regis take the next step and prepare for hopefully another playoff appearance later this year.
“Just making a little smarter decisions throwing the ball. Reading defenses better, I’ve watched a lot of film, so I’ve watched my mistakes, and I’m trying to learn from them and keep getting better and better every day,” said Schumacher.
The first day of official practice is on August 18, with Regis opening the season August 29 at Glide.
