STAYTON, Ore.–  The Regis baseball team picked up their first 2A/1A Special District 3 league series sweep of the season Thursday afternoon, sweeping Mohawk 11-1 and 18-0 at Regis High School.
It’s a big boost of confidence for the young squad.  They came close to sweeps of Central Linn and Culver to open their league schedule, but managed to get the first one now going into next week’s series with Crosshill Christian.  The Rams were efficient with the bats and their defense to win each game in the series in five innings apiece. Regis producing 40 runs on 30 hits and taking advantage of the Mustangs miscues in between, their defense allowed two hits all series long with Jake Bonhke and Korbane Schumacher each throwing no-hitters in Thursday’s doubleheader to bridge their recent run of success into the next series.
“It’s a big boost of confidence.  We really needed that, we could’ve swept some other teams, but getting that sweep just shows us that we’re a team that can compete with anybody.  Anybody in the State and I firmly believe that,” said Rook Smith.  “We got a really, really good pitching pitching staff I feel like this team is on the right track to win a lot of ball games this year.”
After a tough 1-3 start to the year, Regis has won eight of their last ten games, including a four-game winning streak that they have going on right now.  That young squad they started off with, filling voids left by those who’d graduated off of last year’s team, they’re adjusting to the grind of the season
“Coming into the season, it was kind of slow.  We were pretty new, but once we started to warm… the bats started rolling, fielding was great,” starts Tanner Lawson.  “(Next week) is just a new week.  We got to prepare for our opponent. We got to play up and not down to them.”
Lawsone drove in five runs with four hits in Thursday’s doubleheader.  Eaton also had four hits in the two games, and Smith had three hits with 2RBI’s on the day as Regis collected 16 hits on the day.  Schumacher struck out 11 batters pitching, and Bonhke struck out nine.
