Regis Softball Retooling For Year

STAYTON, Ore.–  Last year, the Regis Softball team put themselves back on the map.
A playoff contender in 2A/1A and 3A during the late 2000’s and 2010’s, winning the 2011 State Title. The Rams program got lean for a few years and didn’t even field a team during the 2021-2022 season.
But entering this year, the Regis program has seen a resurgence of sorts.  They reached the 2A/1A State Quarterfinals and won the 2A/1A Special District 3 Title.
And after losing just one senior, Abby Kintz, to graduation, the Rams are looking for yet another deep run in the 2A/1A State Playoffs and another great season ahead.
“It was really awesome, we have a really good coaching staff that’s very experienced and really helpful.  It’s really good to get Regis back on the board,” said Hadley Foster.  “We have more experience now, so we know what it’s like to make it that far.  We know that we want it a lot.”
They return a solid amount of kids from that 19-3 team like Foster, Maddie Hendricks, Sophie Wagner, Mayla Manning and Addie Bishop.
Bishop was the workhorse in the circle for Regis last year.  It was a grind the junior points out, with some games where she was reaching 300 pitches when they had doubleheaders, but the junior credits her defense in helping her when she needed them the most.
“It was difficult, especially when we’re getting into the doubleheaders and seven-inning doubleheaders, so that’s 14 innings total and over 300 pitches.  Sometimes it was difficult, but it was nice to have a good team to back me up,” said Bishop.
Bishop will have some help in the circle with Hailey and Macy Bohnke starting their freshmen year.  The two Bohnke’s are just two of eight freshman that are out for Regis this Spring.  Adding depth to a roster and some youth that the Rams can build from for the coming years.
“From going from nine girls and now 18, doubling it, it will help out a whole lot,” said Bishop of the depth.
Regis will open the season on March 17 at home against Clatskanie.
