TURNER, Ore.– Regis junior Stuart McLaughlin overcame the heat and battled through the fatigue coming off a hot start to Thursday’s Darrel Deedon Invite at Cascade High School.
But despite all that, McLaughlin finished second in the race with a time of 18:01.70 in his first race of the season as he’s looking for a strong season ahead after this strong start.
“It was a tough one. It was super hot, but it was a good race, knocking off the rust and getting back into my race now,” said McLaughlin. “I went a little too fast out, so if I slowed down a bit and pushed a little bit through the middle, I think i could’ve done much better.”
McLaughlin was one of two Rams who finished in the Top 10 with Harper Stoops finishing sixth. Sheridan’s Zachery Dauvin finished seventh with Crosshill Christian’s Jeremiah Stucker and Santiam’s Elias Piercey finishing tenth. Harrisburg’s Johnathan Henderson won the race with a time of 18:00.90.
in the girls’ race, Regis’ Frankie Kohnke won the race with a PR time of 23:02.70 with Harrisburg’s Maddie (Lebanon), McKibben finishing second. Jocilyn Durgeloh, Adelyn Grassman (Harrisburg) and Taft’s Ellie Nightingale finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Santiam’s Absyde Bilyeu finished seventh, and Cascade’s Makaylee Lung finished ninth.
