SALEM, Ore.– After a tough first inning that saw the Washington Angels Future Hiner 18U squad on Sunday afternoon that saw them score four runs in the frame, the MVP 16U squad of Dayton held them to one run over the course of the next five innings of the game. Backing up McNary’s Addison DuLong, who went all six innings for the MVP 16U squad in the tough 6-1 defeat to close out the Stars N Stripes Tournament in the second round of the Silver Bracket at Wallace Marine Park.
“Talking more in the infield, we were really helping our pitcher out and letting her know that if it’s hit, we got her back,” said Willamina’s Lainee Barton.
Barton scored the lone run for the MVP squad on Sunday. The run coming off a solo Home Run in the fifth inning.
Coming off a strong sophomore season that saw Barton playing third for the Bulldogs and helping contributed to a 3A State Playoff appearance on top of a Semifinal appearance as a freshman, it’s been an amazing experience for Barton.
“These last two years have been great for me. Freshman year, getting to go to the Semi-Finals…it was a amazing experience. This year, great year, great team, great family-like team and its what I like to see,” said Barton. “Something that I can continue to improve on is keeping my head in the game and not letting myself down.”
The MVP 16U squad went 3-2 on the weekend, including going 1-1 in Sunday’s Silver Bracket play.
DuLong hit a Grand Slam Home Run as well in Game 1 of Sunday’s schedule of games. Isabelle Arthur of Perrydale struck out five batters in that opening game as well, a 11-6 victory over the Indians Fastpitch 16U squad.
