SCIO, Ore.–  The Scio baseball team locked it down when they needed to lock it down and close out a nice little victory over Amity on Thursday evening.
The Loggers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning, only to see the Warriors claw back into the game.  Momentum was on their side for what would seem like a sound victory after a first inning that saw the Loggers log four hits, forced two errors, and drew two walks in the first inning alone.
That was until the Amity defense led by senior Cordell Prevett on the bump, settled down and just limited the Scio offense to two hits and a walk over the second, third, and fourth innings  The defense allowed the Warriors bats to slowly build some momentum of their own, and entering the bottom half of the fifth inning, Amity found themselves knocking at the door trailing Scio 5-4 in the 3A Special District 3 match-up on Thursday.
“It was nice to have some confidence in our abilities, especially against these tougher teams,  I just think it’s going to propel us forward,” said Prevett of the rally.  “It was just focusing in and playing like we know how we can play.”
But then, with their backs against the wall and the Amity defense looking for another zero on the board, the Logger bats came back around.  And then the runs followed.
Scio tacked on two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, giving themselves a 7-4 cushion.  Arley Lebard and Adam West were responsible for driving in the two runs.
The Loggers’ defense followed with hanging a zero in the top half of the sixth inning and another crooked number in the bottom half of the sixth.  Scio scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to push their lead to 10-4 going into the seventh inning.
And though Amity scored twice in the top half of the seventh inning, that second five-run push over the fifth and sixth innings helped keep the Loggers ahead for their fifth victory on the year, taking the game 10-6.
“It was just all momentum.  We just had to get that talk up, and it was a whole team effort.  Just having that one person start the talk and just have it from there and everyone having fun from there,”said Scio’s Hunter Davis.    “This was one of our better games of the season, I hope this carries on into our next game.  Our next games are very winnable, and I hope we can keep that momentum up for the following weeks.”
The Loggers had 16 hits on the day with David and Lebard both having three hits apiece.  Lebard also drove in two runs as Scio heads to Dayton to play the Pirates on Monday.
Prevett struck out five batters in five innings to lead the Warrior defense.  Jackson Walker drove in two runs and had two hits to help anchor the Amity offense.  The Warriors are at Blanchet on Monday.
A late Scio push helped the Loggers hold off Amity’s rallyThursday. Scio won the 3A Special District 3 game 10-6.
