SCIO, Ore.– The Scio softball team’s recent trip out to La Grande has helped them get up and getting going for the Spring season. Going 3-0 out in Eastern Oregon, the Loggers outscored their opposition 43-1 over three games on the heels of their 5-2 victory over Douglas to open the season.
The bats were on, and so was their defense, and that was something that they carried over to Monday’s 3A Special District 3 opener against Blanchet Catholic.
“We’re hitting the ball really well. Myleigh (Cooper) is pitching really well, big game Wednesday for us to see where we’re at,” said Scio Heach Coach Jim Mask. “We got some young kids starting that just need some more time, and the more time, the better they’ll get. They work hard, I’ve been really impressed with them so far, just trying to get better.”
Cooper, a Cal Poly-commit, and Meagan Trissel, a Chemeketa-commit, are the lone seniors on the roster this year to lead a Scio squad that had reached the 3A State Finals the last two seasons. In Monday’s 16-1, three-inning victory over the Cavs, Cooper pitched an inning, striking out two and hit a solo Home Run while Trissell drove in four runs in the victory.
Around them is a strong staff of players that includes Macy Johnson, Cam Dalke, and Skylur Brown. Brown hit two home runs in Monday’s victory to help Scio open up league and improve to 5-0 on the year, as the junior is looking to bounce back from a slow-end to her sophomore year last Spring.
“It felt great, especially coming off of last season where at the end of the year it wasn’t going great, I felt like I did great today and stepped up,” said Brown.
The 5-0 start to the year has been great, but the Loggers know it’s only the beginning of what is ahead. What’s next, it’s Yamhill-Carlton. The Tigers will make the voyage to Scio on Wednesday in league play and will be just another test that they’ll have to face and try to conquer when they get to work that day.
“We can continue to step up, continue to talk, and make sure that we’re all on the same page and keep our chatter going,” said Brown.
