MEDFORD, Ore.– After waiting a week for their first game of the season, Cascade didn’t seem to skip a beat from last season as their bats and their defense came in clutch in their opening pair of games at the North Medford Tournament Monday despite some early rust.
Their first game against North Bend began as a battle with the Cougars leading the Bulldogs 8-5 going into the fourth inning until Cascade began to settle in and pulled away in their 12-5 victory over the coastal 4A squad.
“We have a lot of freshmen this year, so it was really interesting to see how they would mesh in with us.  It was a little rocky at first, but they got the flow of things.  After the first couple of innings, we got the flow of things and confidence just grew from there,” said Amyah Miranda.
Miranda and Haylee Kastl hit three-run home runs in the game against North Bend before carrying the momentum into their second game of the day against Ashland.  The Cougars led 9-0 going into the fifth inning while Cascade held the Grizzlies to one run in the 9-1 win in favor of the Cougs to close out the day.
“Since we saw the potential and knowing what we could do, we can just continue moving forward from  that.  We’ve been preaching a lot of good energy, high energy, everyone’s a part of the team…so we’ve been really unselfish as a team, and it’s showing through,” said Miranda.
Cascade will close out the North Medford Tournament Tuesday with games against Canby and Churchill.
