KEIZER, Ore.– West Salem freshman Sophia Zuniga overcame the nerves of the moment to win her first District Title Saturday afternoon at 190 pounds.
It’s hard to imagine nerves for Zuniga with her first two victories came way of pins within 47 seconds of the match starting in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals after reaching a first round bye.
But in her Championship round, some nerves were there, but the result was the same:
A victory. By pin. At the 3:32 mark of the match.
It was a good test for the freshman to settle the nerves, to settle the noise, and do what she does great with and just wrestle.
“It was really good. It was really helpful. There’s so much nerves from everything and I think that’s was a really good experience to learn,” Zuniga said of controlling the nerves. “Just going into the match with more confidence and not being scared from. The beginning of the match.
“I didn’t come into this expecting to win and I was really nervous that sometimes my nerves too over a little bit, but it feels awesome.”
Zungia will be joined by McKenna Sanchez, who finished third at 145 pounds in getting the automatic bid to the 5A/6A State Tournament. Aleeya Washburn finished fourth at 190 pounds.
