SALEM, Ore.– The West Salem Boys Basketball team didn’t have that big-win hangover when they returned to the court of play Friday evening against Northern Nash of North Carolina.
The Titans led 34-28 at halftime and led as much as 12 in the third quarter against the Knights in the Capitol City Classic Quarterfinal bout.
“We knew we were the underdogs. We knew we had to come out and fight, we knew we had to run their court in them. They got a lot of talent out there so we had to work harder,” said Evan Wusstig. “And it think we worked hard enough to equal it out with their talent, we just couldn’t pull it out at the end.”
Northern Nash began to chip away at the deficit, eventually tying it at 44 going into the fourth quarter before taking the lead in the frame. The Knight took a 55-51 lead with 3:02 left in the game and West pulled it back to one possession over those final three minutes, but West couldn’t overcome the deficit to take home a other upset victory.
“We can’t hang our head on this loss, we got to keep moving forward and got to keep executing. Executing our offense, our defense is doing well, we just got to keep working hard,” Wusstig said.
Wusstig finished with a team-high 15 points and Jonah Munns scored ten for the Titans, who will play again at 4:30pm at Willamette University.
