FALLS CITY, Ore. The press of Perrydale did its job Wednesday night against Falls City/Kings Valley Charter to open up 1A Casco League play.It was relentless as it created turnovers.
Those turnovers turned into points as the Pirates jumped out to a 24-7 lead on the Mountaineers midway through the second quarter before Falls City/Kings Valley Charter was able to pull Perrydale back in going into the halftime break.
They, the Mountaineers, strung together a few stops defensively and got a few buckets to fall offensively as they trailed the Pirates 29-14 going into the halftime break Perrydale, however, came out of the halftime break a little more energized than how they entered.
It was their defense, their calling card, that sparked them back up in the third quarter as they turned that 15-point lead into a 44-19 lead going into the fourth quarter. And Perrydale didn’t look back following that third quarter to clinched their third-straight victory and improved to 3-1 on the year following their 57-25.
“I think our defense is playing a big role in how we get our energy and get the energy for our offense. It’s fun to play that defense…it’s fun to get hyped, get those steals up and get up with that full-court defense,” said Kaila Gibson. “We can improve on slowing down and making the right passes instead of rushing stuff just because that’s the play.”
Gibson, a freshman, led the Pirates with 21 points. Sophia Jackson and Mallory Gunther each scored six for Perrydale in the win.
Madia Makee led Falls City/Kings Valley Charter with eight points with Sofie Gonzalez and Elyssa Burgess, each scoring six each for the Mountaineers
Perrydale will host Mohawk on Friday, and Falls City will head to Maupin to play in the John Howey Memorial Tournament on Friday. The Mountaineers will open the tournament against South Wasco County.
